Meet Anah’s New Potentate — 2008

Noble Edward E. Sprague was born January 15, 1937 in Machias where he has been a lifelong resident. He graduated from Machias Memorial High School in 1955. He then enlisted in the U. S. Army and served as a paratrooper for three years. After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1958 he attended Washington State Teachers College in Machias. He served as a member of the Maine State Guard for three years as a Staff Sergeant, and as a police officer for the Town of Machias.

In 1966 he started his career as a professional firefighter for the U. S. Navy at the Naval Communications Unit, Cutler, retiring in 1992 as Fire Chief of the Station, a position he held for ten years. He served the Town of Machias as Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department and was "Clerk of the Works" for the construction of the Town's present fire station. He served on the Board of Assessors for the Town of Machias and as a member of the Planning Board. He is past president of the Machias Lion's Club.

Masonically he was raised to the degree of Master Mason in Harwood Lodge #91,. a member of the Maine Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, also a member of Machias Chapter #83 OES. He joined Anah Temple in 1975 and became a member of the Provost Guard until he was appointed an Aide in 1986. He was appointed Assistant Director in 1993, Director of Units in 1996 and was appointed Outer Guard in 1998 by then Potentate Edward Pellon. He is also an honorary member of the Anah Temple Mini-Car Unit.

He is past president of the Washington County Shrine Club and served as their Treasurer for four years. He is a member of the Bangor Court 150 Royal Order of Jesters.

He is married to the former Gayle Kilton of Machias and they have four children and five grandchildren.
