Greetings from the Great White North. The weather outside is frightful but we have one windmill ready to spin. Never thought it was going to happen.
Well, we have kept our record intact. We have not missed a Northeast since we formed the Sauu Nessu Unit in 2002. We have always had a great time at this event and Hartford was no exception. I would first like to thank all the Nobles and their Ladies who attended this event and the entire unit for their great support and hard work during 2006. It takes everyone to make a unit successful. I would also like to thank the Funsters for a very entertaining bus ride to Hartford. It gives new meaning to the phrase "half the fun is getting there".
The weather in Hartford was beautiful and the hotel accommodations were first class. The parade route was a bit long but all the Shrine units were well received.
There were a great many good restaurants in the area and thanks to the free bus service; you could ride around until you found just the right one. For some of us it was an Irish Pub where you could throw your peanut shells on the floor. The only one who had a problem with this was Lady Linda Stiles, who did a good job keeping her area clean, but with a little help from someone in the unit, her shells also made the trip to the floor. It was all down hill from there.
I would like to thank Kora Shrine who invited us to their hotel where we were entertained by a guitar player and his wife. They were great. Some of us really got into the spirit of the night, one person in particular, and he knows who he is. The night ended with a visit to next year's Northeast host, the great people of Newfoundland. Being Canadian myself, I can testify those Newfoundlanders are some of the greatest people in the world who have the great ability of laughing at themselves. They really want a good turnout next year. If your unit is planning to go, it would be wise to start planning right away because it will be an expensive trip. I was there when I was 16 years old and it was a great experience.
Thanks to a member of our award-winning Highlanders I got a chance to attempt to play the bagpipes. After puffing on the thing for about two minutes, I finally got a note, which I was told later was believed to be a B flat. By the way, my apologies to whoever it was I bonked on the head while I was playing. It was a great time and units who miss the Northeast are missing a lot. I have hit all the highpoints that I can talk about in this article, again thanks to the members of the Sauu Nessu and if you ever travel on a Cyr bus and nature calls, please do not push the Red Button, I repeat, please do not push the "RED BUTTON"!
